+ herstory — Overview

Of course I’m a feminist, but just a little bit, because feminists are those crazy, shrill, insane and violently menstruating women who shout and show their tits, when nobody cares to look at them. I’m not ready to say: Hi, my name is Ane, I’m a feminist. At least not without saying: but not in that way. I am a feminist, but with disclaimer, and I don´t think that´s good and/or good enough. It has to be cool to be a feminist again.’

— Ane Høgsberg, ‘Everbody Hates Feminists’.

Why is it shameful to be a feminist in Denmark? And why don´t we do something about it when women and men are still not equal? During the Danish documentary series, ‘Everyone hates feminists’, Ane decides to investigate if it is possible to ‘live without stuff created by men’. She discovers, that almost every dime they´ve spent on interior and stuff in general in their appartement, can be traced back to man-owned companies.

She hires a (women-owned) company to remove everything and together with her boyfriend she goes shopping for interiors produced by woman-owned companies. This decision turns out to be quite stressful and impossible: visiting several shops while searching online for company owner informations, is a very energy- and timeconsuming challenge.

As I was watching the documentary, I revisited decades of mindless consumption. As a former financial advisor I feel ashamed and I don´t dare calculating how much I have spent during the last 40 years – totally unaware of my purchasing power. But I simply did not know where to start, and I guess I was also afraid of shouting out loud that I am a feminist (of course not one of thoose).

It should not be like this.

And it doesn’t have to!

I decided to act on it because I believe (y)our choice of even the most subtle details can change (y)our world. It is time for us to show up and to support each other the best way we can and to do things that matter in a better way.

That said, I wonder, if we don´t support each other, why should anyone else bother? I decided to do my best, or at least to do better – and to use it for gooood.
